11.05.06 - Movement: Ignite a Reaction

this was the final week in our chasing daylight series. overall, i was a little disappointed with our creative end of this series. if i had it to do over again, i would have done some sort of original video or drama series following somebody in real life facing the types of questions we were talking about. i think the story of jonathan and his armor bearer could have benefited from some more connection to today's life.

here are the elements used in the last week of the series. if you're interested in more info on the series, email me.

Music

  1. Tonight (I Want to Live in Your World) - Glassbyrd
  2. Love is the Movement - Switchfoot
  3. Getting Into You - Relient K
  4. Magnetic - Sanctus Real
  5. Invitation Fountain - Violet Burning
  6. I Will - Justin Fox
  7. Filled With Your Glory - Starfield

this book sounds great

this post is a direct copy from my personal blog, which i realize is a little weak, but here it is. and by the way, you can check out my personal blog here.

i'm sort of a quitter-reader. i've got an impressive list of books i've started reading, but usually get distracted about 3 quarters of the way through. so please feel free to read this book and give me a synopsis. otherwise i'll enjoy the first 75% of the book sometime soon.

THE MYTH OF A CHRISTIAN NATION: How The Quest for Political Power is Destroying The Church

Dr. Gregory Boyd

Dr. Boyd states in his introduction that this book is the result of a sermon series he preached in 2004 titled, " The Cross and The Sword", in reaction to growing pressure being placed upon him to endorse political candidates and thier policies from the pulpit. Dr. Boyd has since been branded a heretic by many for his refusal to bow to the will of his church and board members as they desired for him to use his pastoral clout to make political endorsements. The naive assumption that if you dont vote for the party that best matches God's Biblical Mandates equals your abandoning your faith and betraying God is tackled decisively by Dr. Boyd.

impending christmas series

Mary Herlihy's story

series/teaching schedule planning

The process we go through to plan out the next year’s worth of series/teaching topics for cedar hills church.
1. plan a 2-3 day retreat where we can get away from the office and spend some
time with this planning
2. pray individually & then pray together
3. look at a running list of series/teaching topic ideas that Eric (our lead
pastor) maintains that includes resources that we’ve come up with, resources
from the web, etc.
4. talk through the list, discuss series’ that seem to bubble to the top
a. sometimes we have a tendency to get bogged down in the details of
individual series. At those times we have to bring ourselves back to the big
picture so that we can make the most of our planning time together.
5. write down series’ that seem to have some momentum
6. go through the new list and categorize the series/teaching topics. They
usually end up falling into one of these 5 categories:
a. Christian Living
b. Bible
c. Vision/Values
d. Theology
e. Felt-Need
7. look over the list and determine if we’re missing anything big that should be
taught on during the next year.
8. pencil series onto next year’s calendar. This scheduling is impacted by a
few assumptions:
a. statistically, the biggest days for people who don’t normally, to
attend a church gathering are easter, mother’s day and Christmas
b. the fall is a good time to begin new emphases; people are typically
excited to get back into the rhythm of the school year and have a renewed
passion for church involvement.
9. compile that schedule into an ms excel document

this is a basic outline of how we get the next year's schedule put together. while this functions as our teaching schedule, it is totally flexible based on opportunities and issues that arise, whether a sense of spiritual leading or simple current events.

October 1, 2006 - unloading guilt

here is the music set for this week. The Get Up Kids are one of my favorite bands and definitely worth a listen. The album, guilt show, is awesome. Of course, so are the rest.

  1. How Long is Too Long - The Get Up Kids

  2. I Was Wrong - Social Distortion

  3. Freedom Reigns - Rita Springer

  4. August 30 - Delirious

  5. God of Miracles - Ryan Townsend (if you dig Ryan's music, email him and tell him so. Several of his songs are available on Soul Survivor USA's "Worship USA Vol. 1", which is really good.)

  6. Reminders of Your Mercy - Ryan Townsend (This song is also available on Soul Survivor USA's "Worship USA Vol. 1", which is really, really good...really.

"worship" music we use regularly

I've been the music & arts pastor for Cedar Hills Church in Sandpoint, ID for 5+ years now. One of the biggest challenges I've faced is finding good resources for music. Many of the typical "worship" music sites are filled with great music, but a lot of it (the popular stuff) is sort of encrypted in a Christian code using terms and metaphors that are not readily identifiable to the average person who may happen into our gatherings. We have made a choice that our gatherings should be understandable to most everyone, regardless of their past experience. Whether they resonate with it or not is God's job, but we feel we have a responsibility to present the good news of Christ's love in a way that is at least comprehensible if not compelling.

So here's a list of artists that we cover pretty consistently. We may only do one or two songs by some of these artists, but we've resonated with their music to some level.

  • Delirious
  • Matt Redman
  • Ryan Townsend (this guy has yet to relttsease a "worship" music album, but I'm lucky enough to get a copy of pretty much everything he records, so we get a lot of great music there. Email him if you're interested in hearing it.)
  • Soul Survivor USA (this is one project that Ryan was heavily involved with, which didn't get the distribution that it could have, I think because the powers that be felt that it wasn't up the alley of the mainstream "worship" music crowd. It's my favorite "worship" record and I think the most underrated.)
  • Justin Fox(this guy is an independent artist based out of orange county in southern california. his music is fun, heartfelt and his live show is engaging and uplifting. he's a christian artist who gives christian artists a good name.)
  • Tim Hughes
  • Sanctus Real
  • Starfield
  • U2
Please reply with music that your church covers and enjoys, especially if it's stuff that isn't in the latest worshipmusic.com newsletter.
